These are the same people, Malayan and Chinese, However, Indonesia is by far lagging behind in providing welfare for its people. It is such a difference walking around in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore compared to Jakarta, Surabaya or Makassar. It is the dirt, the lack of services, the quality of the museums and public services in general, the restaurants, the cafés. Could the way of government cause the difference? Indonesia experienced a dictatorship for 33 years with numerous victims. During that period, and even now, the role of the army is supreme. Corruption has expanded without any check. There was hardly a critical press. There has been decent changes of government in both Malaysia and Singapore without the shedding of blood. Neither Malaysia nor Singapore have gone to the extent of invading and occupying neighbouring states like Indonesia did in 1962 with West Papua and in 1975 with Portuguese Timor. Maybe also education is a factor.

Education is the factor - for a people to escape the cycle of poverty.
According to Paul Collier, the factors that trap a country into poverty are: civil war (Indonesia had Banda Aceh), the "resource curse" (Indonesia's lumber), landlocked (not a factor for Indonesia), and bad governance (Indonesia's military).

There are many factors from education, corruption to military. But the root cause is leadership. For 30+ years, the leaders did not care about his people. And unfortunately, the leaders can stay for 3 decades to make matter worse. Almost similar like Phillipines, that's why Phillipines is in the same situation like Indonesia.

Of course, Malaysia & Singapore are not perfect. Corruption & limited-press exist. But still their leaders are better.

The size of Indonesia is NOT an excuse because proven that many big size countries are much better than Indonesia. And also, comparing Jakarta (not Indonesia), Singapore & KL , Jakarta is still the worst.

people like these are stupid. and need more education.. comparing Indonesia to its neighbors.... its incomparable...

do you know what the size of Singapore CITY is, compared to Indonesia? Governing Singapore is as easy as Bogor city t.. and Governing Malaysia is as easy as Jawa Barat... these countries have landsize and population equivalent to only 2% of Indonesia... thats why....

"There was hardly a critical press"

"like Indonesia did in 1962 with West Papua"

The Netherlands Gave Papua to Indonesia, if Indonesia was Fully Colonized by Britain it would have had Papua Nugini

"and in 1975 with Portuguese Timor".

Indonesia took over the territory in 1975 at the request of various anti-communist East Timorese groups such as APODETI, Kota, and Trabhalista who were pitted in a civil war with communist group Fretilin (Balibo Declaration). Internationally, US President Gerald Ford and Australian PM Gough Whitlam asked Suharto to take-over the territory to crush the establishment of a potential East Timorese communist state under Fretilin during the height of Cold War.

Now, after President Habibie gave independence to East Timor, the place is quick returning to civil war between ethnic-"easterners" (Lorosae) and ethnic-"westerners" (Loromonu). There is now even a separatist movement within East Timor, the Republica Timor Tasi Mane (RTTM) declared by the loromonu.

In the End, Timor Timur's GDP was Higher than "Timor Leste's"

"Maybe also education is a factor"

LMAO Educated Indonesian certainly more than 27 Milion + 4 Milion...Singaporeans and Malaysians working in NASA,Boeing or Airbus as Engineers are not as Much as Indonesia's according to my friend....
