Every time I (an Englishman) go there all I get is 'You have to pay into Wales, don't you?! hehe! It's free to get into England though, isn't it?!'
Like that's a boast!
I tell you what. The reason there's no payment to get into England is that with the number of people LEAVING Wales, there's not a gate in the world that could stop them! If you look in the hedgerows coming out of Wales, they're full of £5 notes! People are throwing them out of the car windows and screaming 'Let me out! Let me out!'

I will be visiting with a friend (both of us 24years). She has never been.

We want to have a look around as well as do something that might be interesting for us. If it is sunny we don't mind going for a walk or doing something out of doors.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

I'm from Singapore and I'm here since Oct 06. I have never been to any of the Europe countries so this is my first time coming to UK London. I am really really very disappointed. I always thought the people here are more friendly and educated since the living standard here is higher than any of the Europe countries. One example, I was dragging 2 big luggages going to liverpool station. I asked for help from a guy to open up the glass gate to let me through and to my surprise he told me to open up the glass gate myself and I tolerate that. What anger me was he even WANTED me to close up the stupid glass gate. Is this some kind of racism or is that the services from UK? Or is UK is not welcoming any visitor/tourists. I tell myself that I won't even recommend any of my friends to come here for hoildays. I hope the government can try to do something about it. Try going to some eastern countries, you might feel the different approach by the people. So warm and friendly.

Why should we, as Londoners put up with this? Its as if we are living and working in a war-torn cold-era type city! Why hasn't TFL done anything to improve the commuter experience? It can't possibly be lack of funds, as the fares are already the most expensive in Europe! As if the overcrowding, constant delays and exhorbitant fares arent bad enough! Not a very nice picture we are presenting to our foreign guests for the 2012 Olympics is it?

I've always wanted to visit, but will finally get a few days in the country in May. I want to go away from "touristy" areas and stay somewhere fairly authentic with a strong sense of history and friendly locals (I will be traveling alone). Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking the Highlands but am definitely open. Thank in advance!

I'm planning a trip to visit my aunt and uncle in Cambridge. We were talking about a day trip to London and the prices of travel were shocking. The train fare was bad enough, but I learned that the fare on the tube is four pounds. That's a shocking amount (even when the exchange rate was much much better it would still be over $5). I can buy a monthly transit pass in Atlanta for $60 (about 30 pounds). I think if you don't have a pass the fare is $2. I realize London has a much larger transit system, but are salaries in London that high? How do the people who live there afford it? Doesn't the government subsidize public transportation? I know they have some system to limit the number of drivers in the city, but the best way to keep people from driving their cars in London is to make public transport (trains and tubes and buses) a much cheaper alternative. But my question is, how do Londoners afford transportation?

There are so many questions posted on here ref. Is Scotland part of England or Does Wales govern itself over England and worse of all the answers referencing Ireland as part of the UK!!! I despair no geography/history must be taught in England - either that or The Wind that Shakes the Barley must of been banned!!! And everyone is Irish come 17 March???

I know I will be hated now - but blame the pinot!! :)xx
