I'd heard that, traditionally, in Latin America, women added their husband's name to their own two surnames, preceded by 'de'. So when Anna Maria Vazquez Rodriguez married Senor Martinez she became Anna Maria Vasquez Rodriguez de Martinez. Or possibly Anna Maria Vasquez de Martinez. Does this still happen, or is it true that many women just hang onto their own names these days?

If I took enough trains, could I travel from the United States to Brazil? Do any even cross the Panama Canal? Are there any countries in South America without decent railroads?

I am a black american and my boyfriend would like for me to go to El Salvador for The Holidays (November - December). i've heard about the gangs and just the raw realness in El Salvador. I wanted to know if El Salvador is safe for black americans to visit because I will surely stick out. His family lives in rural parts of El Salvador although he has a house in San Salvador. Any info is helpful

Our only option, provided we do not receive our nicaragua passports by July 13th, is to stand in line at the national passport office in Miami. how long is this line, how long does it take, and what are the chances we will get our passports after all of the waiting in line?

Hi

We are planning a trip to Costa Rica. We have done a bit of travel before but are wondering about safety. Is this a place to rent a car and go independently to major sites on East and West Coasts and inland, or should we go on a small group tour?

Travel countries say this is a very safe place and the safest in Central America but we have seen a worrying article on Wikipedia:

In recent years, San José has suffered a growing problem with crime, due partly to population growth in the greater metropolitan area and limited economic opportunities. Tourists are frequently targeted and it is advisable to use taxis even for extremely short distances. Visitors to the heart of San Jose should pay particular attention due to lax policing and the presence of gangs, some of which have operated with impunity for years. Tourists are advised to carry only as much cash as is required and to leave credit cards in a safe at their hotel.

Can you shed some light?

A friend and I have a trip through Argentina and Bolivia planned for dec/jan of this year (and the next :0)) but we also want to go to Peru, for which we don't have lots of references.

We would go in through Puno from La Paz (Bolivia) and we obviously want to see Machu Picchu. But where to stay? How to get there? Where and how to book the excursions to Machu Picchu from Cusco? We have plenty of info from the internet, but we'd like to hear the opinion of someone who has actually been there. Is it worth it to make any kind of reservation from here, or should we wait until we're there. Are the markups in prices very significant if we book our trip from here?

After that, we'd go to Lima, but we don't want to fly. What companies have buses that go from Cuzco to Lima? where to stay there?

Do we have to go to the north of Peru for good beaches (not just for surfing, we want to swim and have the pretty white sand and all :-P) or are there beaches closer to Lima worth our time?

I have always wanted to go to Peru. I have some graduation money to fund a short trip (7-10d), I would like to pay for portions for my boyfriend also. I need to do as much as I can for as cheap as I can. We are big on adventure and nature.

Any suggestions or advise...? I ordered Frommer's guide to Peru... on its way.

Thanks!

and was wondering if it is considered polite to bring gift(s) to the family, who I lived with for 6 six two summer's ago. They are not very well off, and I know that taking me own even for only a few days as an extra mouth to feed will be a financial burden. However, I don't want to insult their pride and show up with gifts if you know what I mean. Thanks very much!
