El salvador i can honestly say is very safe the times i hace been there i was never in danger nor did i see any ms 13 gang members at all. what you will see alot of is military man walking on the street cops on almost all the streets because many illegal nicaraguans are trying to get fake papers to stay and work there and they also steal and most of the nicaraguans that are seeking to get papers are homeless so the police is around to keep them off sleeping on the streets so they are trying to keep it safe and clean. as for a war el salvador has been out of war since 1992 colombia is the one that is at war. el salvador is very nice so are the people i would highly recomend.

It continually amazes me why someone without a clue feels compelled to answer. Is looking like an idiot worth two points? There is no war in Honduras and there hasn't been any war here for years. That said, you have an excellent answer from the person who described all the attractions and places to beware of in the three countries. It's a shame you only have two weeks, because it will be impossible to see it all in that time. As another answerer mentioned, it will be difficult or impossible to take a rented car across borders, so you may want to consider the extensive bus systems that Central America has to offer. You can travel your main routes inexpensively in luxury buses and use the tour or local buses for your side trips. Ticabus, King Quality and Hedman Alas are three of the express companies that travel the countries on your list. I have to agree that if you simply use the same common sense precautions you would in any country/city, you will be just fine. You will find English speaking people most everywhere you go, especially the site seeing areas, and will find that most locals will go out of their way to help you with your Spanish when they see you trying.

I travelled to El Salvador 3 years ago and yes, it was safe. Obviously you wont go to the shanty towns or parts of the city where there are gangs or crime is high. If you stick to the safe places and dont go flashing that you're an american tourist, yes it is safe. I can also ask the question the other way round: Is it safe to go to NY? The answer is always the same: it is safe if you take your precautions. El Salvador was in civil war years ago. It is a very nice country, visit the nice touristical areas and you'll be fine. Sometimes it's more dangerous to visit places like LA or NY than central America. It all depends where you go and what you do.

San Salvador is as safe as YOU make it. If you want to go stolling in the slums after dark you can certainly find trouble.
The civil war has been over for years now and, yes, El Salvador has a culture. If you want to visit use the same caution and common sense you would exercise in a US city and enjoy.
