I'm thinking of traditional surnames associated with those areas of Ireland like LaVelle, Reville, Maye, Marren, Costello, Deveraux, Henri, Gascoigne, Dupree, etc.. These very French sounding surnames seem especially predominant in Western Sligo and North-eastern Mayo. Any ideas why?

"The blue the balck the orange and green the emblem of our nation." Is that refering to the flag? if so where is the black coming from?

My best friend and I will be travelling from Australia to the UK then on to Europe and the US commencing March 08, and as my birthday falls on 18 March, we thought we couldn't pass up the opportunity to spend St Patricks day before it in Ireland, therefore I was hoping for some suggestions about where might be a good place to celebrate my 'late 20's' birthday! Any other suggestions about what to see would be appreciated, can't wait to get there!

I live in the republic only 10 miles from Crossmaglen, but I'd like to have a look around Crossmaglen. Is there likely to be animosity there to someone with a British accent who has a complete dis-interest in the whole sectarian thing?

I know there are two official languages in Ireland - Irish(Gaelige) and English.
However, hardly anyone speaks Irish as their first language and English is by far the predominant language spoken throughout the country.
It seems almost everyone in Ireland speaks only English now.

1. When did English become a predominant language in Ireland?

2. Why has Irish language been dying out? Have English people forced to speak English to Irish people?
