I'm staying in Paris on vacation and my French is very limited (to say the least). I had heard that as long as you make an attempt to speak French that they will be more appreciative and perhaps nicer to you--but it seems like if I try to speak French, they just find my attempts humorous and if I just start off speaking English they are less attentive or downright rude.

Mom + Dad + 2 college kids will travel - have 2 weeks in Europe - December 28th - January 10th. We don't want to ski nor snowboard nor participate in other winter sports. We're Americans. None of us have ever been to France nor Spain (have been to Germany quite a bit, Italy, the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands) and have lived and traveled overseas for 15 years. A couple of us speak passable Spanish but no French. We like traveling by trains and boats (and other public transport); we like museums, historic buildings, beautiful natural scenery, and walking; we like eccentric hotels not new ones with cookie cutter rooms. We are thinking of Paris first, then possibly Avignon for New Years, then on to Barcelona and Madrid, but not sure. How long would you recommend staying in various cities and where would you go?

He won a silver medal Winter Pentathlon at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, it was a demonstration sport and a gold medal Modern Pentathlon in the1948 Olympics in London.

What I would like to know is why isn't he recognised along side the other four athletes who have won medals in both Winter and Summer Olympics.

I have tried the sports section. Olympics but no such luck

My husband and I would like to travel to Europe to sightsee. However, we can only go this winter (Nov-Dec). Ideally we'd like to go to Italy, France, etc, but is it too cold? What's a good place to go for first time visitors to Europe? We're thinking about Greece/Turkey also. What about Spain/Portugal?

I have been talking to a guy online and he told me that when he was younger his dad worked for the EU so they lived in several countries like Belgium, and Italy. Now he told me his dad is a chemistry professor at a university. So my question is, could this be true? I'm skeptical about it.

I want to travel Europe alone and want some information. I'm a noob to this and so far have established RailEurope would be a cheap way to get between countries - but I need to know what else I would need! For example, do you book all the hostels ect in advance or just turn up.

How does it all work basically?

I know there is no actual answer, so I'm just asking for your opinion. I dream of the day I can go to Europe, and being from the southern part of the US, kindness and hospitality is something I hold as a top priority. I'm planning a dream vacation, and getting to know the locals while on my trip is a crucial part of my possible enjoyment. I'd hate to go somewhere where people are distant and cold, even if its the most beautiful place on earth.

So, what country in Europe (in your opinion, of course) has the friendliest and most hospitable people?
