My Red Sox again this year seem like they will be heading into next season without a proven, established closer, with Papelbon moving to the rotation. Just as in 2003 when they decided to use the failed "Closer by Committee" approach . And of course, Sox went into 2006 with closer questions but happened to luck out with Papelbon.

The so called "Boy Wonder" GM, Theo Epstein, that gutless wonder who sneaks out of Fenway in a gorilla suit seems to under-value the need for a dominating closer year after year as many Sabermaticians of his ilk often do.

To my mind, a great closer along with a great set-up guy can effectively shorten a game to only 7 innings. Combinations like Shields / K-Rod and Nathen / Rincon etc are a must for success. Epstein seems to think otherwise.

Any comments on the need for a great closer , being over-rated or undervalued?

Anybody can hit a home run by pulling the ball, is there any ball players who have the strength to hit home runs in the opposite direction. Right handed batters hitting homeruns to the left field, or left handed batters who hit homeruns to the right side of the field a lot. Super power baseball players. Also has there ever been a baseball player to get the 50/50 club? Jose Canseco made 40/40 club (40 stolen bases and 40 homeruns). Has anyone hit the 50/50 club?

Today, according to the AP, Yankees hit with $26 million luxury tax, raising total to nearly $98 million. Boston is the only other team with $497,549.

Why, because of the high payroll. But isn't baseball a business? They pay extra for the payroll to win, but is that a "luxury" ?

Goldman Sachs awarded their CEO a $53.4 Million Christmas bonus, do they pay a luxury tax for that now?

I don't know, it just seems ridiculous they have to pay taxes on paying people salaries. Usually people get tax breaks.
