Today, according to the AP, Yankees hit with $26 million luxury tax, raising total to nearly $98 million. Boston is the only other team with $497,549.

Why, because of the high payroll. But isn't baseball a business? They pay extra for the payroll to win, but is that a "luxury" ?

Goldman Sachs awarded their CEO a $53.4 Million Christmas bonus, do they pay a luxury tax for that now?

I don't know, it just seems ridiculous they have to pay taxes on paying people salaries. Usually people get tax breaks.

Boston and NY are the two biggest baseball markets. There is the MLB revenue sharing. There should be no luxury tax.

I agree with you completely.
You shouldn't bill your biggest teams just because the spend the most. There's a reason why these cities HAVE to pay more money than anyone else. Their citizens actually CARE about their teams. Sorry Kansas City can't afford Damon anymore, they should find more fans to get revenue, not blame it on the Yankees and the Red Sox.

If there is revenue sharing, that's enough to comfort the whining crybabies in Tampa Bay because they can't win. Stop blaming the big teams wallets because you're inferior.

Agreed, this tax is all about keeping the higher organizations from buying anyone they want because of all the money they make. Without this tax, teams like the Devil Rays and Royals will NEVER have a chance at acquiring and keeping good players. If you're a Yanks fan, then sorry...but the MLB is trying to restrict your Evil Empire from expansion...

I prefer a luxury tax over a salary cap anyday. It is suppose to encourage teams like the Yankees to stop spending so much. Apperantly it doesn't work. Again, I'd prefer a tax over a salary cap. A salary cap would ruin baseball.

DO YOU FOLLOW BASEBALL? THE LUXURY TAX IS SO THAT THE RICHER TEAMS CAN'T BUY UP ALL THE BEST PLAYERS. THIS TAX HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GOVERNMENT. THAT TAX IS PAID TO MLB.
