I'm an atheist, and I've been wondering - do most Christians usually discount atheists as bad people and judge them because of that? I wonder if they only see agnostics as people who can be saved, whereas atheists should only go to hell.

If you're a Christian, how do you view those who are atheists?

ok this Q asked how many christians had read material with OPPOSING views to christianity...and the 2nd answerer "k k " had said "It's just that it's so hard for even the strongest Christian to believe at times, that we shouldn't pollute our minds with any reason not to believe. "

and in another question http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aryp6a2bWSrkczae1Ta5itLsy6IX?qid=20070528192852AANdeQn a lot of christians had said that they had "better things to do " and stuff....or had read just about ONE book...

why is it,that if christianity makes such perfect sense and you're completely sure of it's validity ,do you REFRAIN from reading other material?
NOTE:no generalizations,i know many VERY eduated ones

I watch Trinity, I read the scripture, and I love everyone I hang with at work, etc. and slip things in about God as I go. It feels great, and I don't think I have to be a religious clone to be an effective Christian.

(Preface: My nephews love these things. I've seen all of them up to the one with the SUV song and I've heard the song about about 100 times. I may or may not be taking it too seriously, IDK.)

Is it moral - in the middle of an energy crisis that has been building for nearly a decade now - for a children's religious video to advocate careless consumerism and gratification in a peppy song that glorifies the act of driving in a large, oversized SUV to the local gas station to pick up a single mini-bag of potato chips?

Is this symptomatic of consumerism in Christianity at large? Christmas is the largest, most lavish holiday of the year, and "Baby Jesus" is used to sell everything from cars to laxatives. Is this a Christian thing or an American thing? I don't know.

Why is it, when somebody on here makes a point and is a muslim, that people automatically assume the person is from another country? I asked this question trying to make the point that even though our country is SEEN as being Christian, all of the negative news does not mean that it's christianity. I was trying to make the point that you can not base the way a religion is by the negative news of any particular country. So why did so many refuse to even look at the point but make statements like "allow you in our country" and "you don't realize our country is a melting pot" ? Of course I know that, my entire family is American born and raised, and not from anywhere near the middleeast or any islamic nation. Are people trained to ignore points but just attack? I'm seriously wondering about this, because instead of answering the question and seeing the point, it was either an attack, an insult, or trying to educated this 23 year old white American woman about her own country.

This was from Matthew 10:34. I have spent the entire afternoon reading the Gospels and have now gotten through all of them. I am utterly horrified by what I read. I always had this idea he was the prince of peace if you will. I now realize if you read what he states closely that he is angrier than God himself. In all four gospels he mentions cutting off body parts, cities and children being killed and only a small percentage of people getting to heaven. Who the hell am I to think I have a chance? In the book of revelation again it mentions only a small percentage of people will make it into heaven. Oh my heart grieves this will never do if I am to live another 30 years or so and have to live with this. Can someone restore my faith in this. What sword does Jesus speak of. I thought I would feel better reading this stuff.

The Creationists at the new museum are claiming that all humans and animals were vegetarians before the Fall and that it was God's perfect plan for us to be that way.

If you are a literal Creationist who believes this doctrine, are you also a vegetarian now? I assume that you would want to live your life according to the original perfect plan?

Roman Catholics often say that it was their church that gave us the Bible. They sometimes claim this when defending their "sacred tradition" so that they might support extra biblical teachings such as purgatory, penance, indulgences, and Mary worship. They often say the only way the Christian church knew what books are to be included in the Canon of Scripture was because it was revealed by word-of-mouth in the early church; that is, by the tradition of the Catholic Church.

In personal practice:

Do you adhere to strict interpretation, taking the meaning of all passages literally, while considering it to have come directly from God complete and in its present form?

Or, do you take a more broad interpretation of any of these factors? If so, in what way does your view diverge from the more traditional methods of Biblical interpretation?

May peace and blessings be upon you.

With this platform being meant for sharings and dialogues between people of various faiths and backgrounds, I am currently drawn to the suggestion of exploring some passages from the Gospel of John in the Bible. The passages I have in mind are as follows:

"If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever - the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you." (John 14:15-18)

"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me,..." (John 14: 26-30)

"When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me; but you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning." (John15: 26-27)

"All this I have told you so that you will not go astray." (John 16: 1)

"Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' Because I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned." (John 16: 5-11)

"I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you." (John 16: 12-15)

"In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." (John 16: 16)

"Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language, but will tell you plainly about my Father." (John 16: 25)

I thought of suggesting these excerpts as extracted from "The Holy Bible, New International Version ..." which allows me to quote with the following mention:

"Taken from the HOLY BIBLE, NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION @ 1973, 1978 by the International Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers."

Looking forward to a peaceful, healthy and enriching interaction in the spirit of dialogue.

May peace and blessings be upon you.
