The Holy Sprit is God in sprit form. He comes and dwells in the heart of a person when they get saved. Once you have God living in your heart he will show you things that you never saw before and you will understand things you never understood before. Things you thought were OK to do before you got saved will suddenly feel not OK. For instance, before I got saved I was in a rock band. I thought that the songs we sang were OK. I didn't see anything wrong with the songs we performed. But after I got saved the Holy Spirit showed me the sin and evil in those songs and I can't even stand listening to them any more much less actually singing them. Now I hear those songs and I'm appauled that those words once came out of my mouth. Before I got saved I used to think that it was ok for a woman to wear pants but after I got saved the Holy Spirit showed me that it is not ok for me to wear pants. Before I got saved I thought it was OK for a woman to wear shorts and swim suits and short skirts. After I got saved, the Holy Spirit showed me that wearing such things is the same as being naked in God's eyes. When I got saved I looked at my bookcase full of books and was embarrased by some of the books I had in there. I cleaned out all of the sinful books and am currently working to replace them with good, Godly books. Before I got saved I used to think that getting drunk on strong drink was just good old fun. But after I got saved the Holy Spirit showed me the sin in it and he also showed me that I don't need that junk to have a good time.

The Holy Spirit works through the Word to conform an individual more and more to the image of Christ. He convicts of sin and sanctifies a believer.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

I think it changes our spirit in offering us the fruits of the spirit described in Galatians; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, etc.

I think our mind is changed to one more of Gods that can see and spot sin and what is truly evil and see and have revealed the truths that were otherwise hidden in Scripture.

Its kind of like when you watched a movie as a kid, you saw only the things a kid would notice and understand. Yet you watch the same movie as a adult, its not the same experience and you pickup on everything that was missing. So it is with the Holy Spirit and us. He matures our mind to something more holy if we let him.

These are the scriptures I've been looking at lately.

Galatians 5:24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions [pathema] and desires [epithumia].

This means inner afflictions and sufferings and turning about sudden periods of rage or passion that are maddening like wine.

Instead, we are supposed to turn our laughter to mourning. James 4:9, 10
Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

This is because God is interested in reality. Imagination does not impress him!

Isaiah 65:2, 3 says:
All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations— a people who continually provoke me to my very face, offering sacrifices in gardens and burning incense on altars of brick.

It's so easy to fall into this trap. I've done it so many times under the guidance of "many teachers." 2 Timothy 4:3, 4 says: "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths."

In the dictionary, teach means to point out signs. In the Hebrew, teach means to shed light on. What is the relationship between signs and the imagination? By definition, the imagination is about the future, I think. Otherwise, you're talking about a creative moment that you're enjoying right now which would be connected with thankfulness, according to Scripture. The words "think" and "thank" are related in the English language.

Deuteronomy 13:1-3 says: "If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you have not known) "and let us worship them," you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul."

Psalms 37:5, 6
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.

You begin to understand the concept of "dying to self". Humans are the most self-oriented creatures from birth. Only concerned with their own needs. We have to be taught to even consider the needs of others. When we become Christans, whatever our goals, purpose, wants, desires , etc. were in the past, they become replaced with Christ. We learn to live with His will in mind instead of our own. It takes some time to developer this new mind set, but it becomes our basic desire as we grow in Christ. It is a battle of the carnal or natural man with the new spiritual man. We begin to realize that the things of this world are only temporary and the things of God are eternal. Our whole value system changes and we begin to love on a higher plain than before. That's why we spread the gospel to complete strangers around us...God's love compels us to share what we have found in Christ.

Jesus says being born again is like the wind, you do not see it, but its effect testifies of its existence.

Then the believer experiences a complete turnaround in his life:

"Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" (2 Cor. 5:17).

As Christ said, The Kingdom of God is within you.
