Am I the only one who cannot believe the level of illiteracy out there? This site has Spellcheck for crying out loud! I'm not talking about shorthand here (imho, lol etc etc). I'm talking about things like "fued", "sence" , i before e, and they're, there and their. There are way too many to put here; I'm sure you get the idea.

Don't even get me started on the people who cannot figure out a search engine for book, movie and song titles!

People have only spoken English in Australia since the 1800s, when deportation of criminals began. How then, has the Australian accent develop so quickly to be so different to other accents?

I'm 12 and live around a very diverse group of people that speak many dif. languages. I think it's starting to mess me up. Whenever I read or speak without really thinking about how I'm saying something, the words come out funny. I'm from NY and we say words dif. from others, and on top of that my parents are from trinidad & tobago (kinda like jamica). Also sometimes i goto virginia. oh, and I'm learning spanish & korean. So what I'm saying is; when I talk some of the words come out with "jamican" accent or a Really southern one or a spanish one (I don't know how), oh and a ny one. I know I'm not dsylexic, i go to a "gifted ppl" school. Do u think it'll EVER go away!?

Knowing how to speak German helped Hong Kong-born Princess Alexandra of Denmark learn Danish quickly within months, since the two languages apparently have a lot of similarities. On the same note, it's easier for a Spanish-speaker to pick up Italian or Portuguese than it is for someone who speaks only Korean.

Please clarify this. I am listening to the Pimsleur language tapes in an attempt to increase my Spanish fluency. I've always known the Spanish language to be referred to as Español.

However, these tapes state that in Latin American countries, Castellano is preferred over Español. I have been to both Panama and Mexico, and no one to my knowledge has ever referred to Spanish as Castellano. However, I am headed to South America (Peru) in March, and don't know if Castellano or Español will be preferred.

I've done a bit of internet research, and have gotten some relatively solid answers, but I'm curious to know everyone's take on this. I don't want to be misinformed, and would love some answers from Spanish speakers around the world.
