I can not learn this way and I can't seem to find in Quebec a school that is for adults that can not speak French and want to learn. I know they have an immersion classes for new comers to Canada but the government will not let me attend this class because I am a Canadian even if I lived almost all my life in the US Please any help I am ready to give up and leave QUEBEC!!

Hi! I also live in Quebec, in a francophone city and French is my first language. First of all, as someone pointed, reading the dictionary won't help you learn the language. Have you considered taking private lessons? It really helps when someone only has to focus on your difficulties to make you progress. Watching television in French is also a good thing, though it might be frustrating not to understand what people say, at least you hear some French. From time to time, watch a movie in English subtitled in French, or the other way around. even a french movie with French subtitles is a good way to lear, you get to hear AND see! Look for language schools and conversation groups in the phone book. Oh, reading the paper could also be good. Eventually, you'll be able to recognized the most frequently used words.
Do you live near Montreal? Quebec city?
Go see web sites from universities around you, most of them have programs in French as a Second Language. Like http://www.fep.umontreal.ca/langues/eng/coursfrint.html
And you can always try to look for the basics online!
Good luck!

Are you in the province of Quebec or Quebec city?

If you are in the country side, I don't know where you can turn, but if you live in Montreal or Quebec city, go to the local French speaking University. They offer evening classes for beginners and certificate programs.

In Montreal I found that the Universite de Montreal has a great program.

I wish you the best of luck, learning French is hard but I've found it to be well worth the effort

Are you in Quebec city or in the province of Quebec? If you are around the Montreal area I actually have a friend who is the manager of a language school in Montreal, surely I could have brochures sent to you or put you in contact with her.

If you're elsewhere in the province then it can be a little more difficult, but universities are a good place to look. Private lessons are great too.

Hey there! I can imagine how you fel, but do not worry! Once you find your own way of learning you will pick up the language no problem! You would not read the english dictionairy to learn english, so reading the french dictionairy will not help to learn french.

However, in Quebec the french language changes slightly, not a lot, but very slightly.

I am English, however have an A Level in French and can speak quite fluently! If you would like any help feel free to e-mail me, but i will help you with a few phrases to get you by...

Je m'appelle - My name is ......
Je voudrais apprendre la langue française - I would like to learn the French Language.
Là où est - Where is .....

Don't give up! There is always help out there, and if the government are too tight fisted to help you then yu can do it other ways!!

Don't worry. You just need to have some grammatical basis. Then, when you are in Quebec, you will be able to improve your French by speaking to people there. If they see you are trying to speak French, people there will be very kind and may help you a lot. Have fun. I'm French myself and most French people love people in Quebec because they are friendly and have a funny accent

If you are in High school you should be able to go to English school. If you live in the Longueuil area, there is a program at Antoine-Brossard to learn french. My mom went there and she can sort of speak. But when you learn you have to practice french too. Speak to other people in french. I sympathise, its horrible moving to quebec if you don't know french. Luckily most people speak french and english.
