Does anyone feel like I do? I love the atmosphere of Christmas, the tree at night, baking cookies , the music etc, however, this year I have had enough. My step daughter complaining that the 7 presents we bought are grandchild is not enough, the running around , the expense, rude people. What happened to the true meaning of the holiday? How many of you would like to see the one nice gift per child and a stocking full of goodies, a day together playing a nice board game, looking at photos, a nice meal and unity, instead of the kids sitting in front of a video game or computer all day?

The History of Christmas

In ancient pagan times, the last day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere was celebrated as the night that the Great Mother Goddess gives birth to the baby Sun God. It is also called Yule, the day a huge log is added to a bonfire, around which everyone would dance and sing to awaken the sun from its long winter sleep.

In Roman times, it became the celebrations honouring Saturnus (the harvest god) and Mithras (the ancient god of light), a form of sun worship that had come to Rome from Syria a century before with the cult of Sol Invictus. It announced that winter is not forever, that life continues, and an invitation to stay in good spirit.

The last day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere occurs between the 20th and 22 December. The Roman celebrated Saturnalia between 17 and 24 December.

I hate how so many places close on Christmas. It's so dumb. I'm more than willing to work on this holiday. It's so boring too. Why is this even a federal holiday? Easter isn't so what's the big deal anyway?

My question to you is does it feel like christmas time?

Here it doesn't, It feels like late September.

I live in New York, USA where it hasn't snowed once this whole fall/winter season. Today, [12/23/06] was 60 degrees with 2 inches of rain. I want to see flurries at least with temperatures in the high 30's or low 40's.

So again, does it feel like christmas time where you are?
