Do you think depressed people who came to this site to ask questions ever commited suicide based on people's smart-*** answers? I've seen a few "I want to kill myself, what do I do?" questions pop up every now and then, and they always get a lot of other users telling them to do it as a joke. Do you think someone may have actually taken those remarks to heart and did it?

Please let us not forget that there is a big difference between being paranoid and being aware. Except for a friend I sometimes have lunch with I’ve kept this story a secret from most of my friends up until now. Back around October 2003 while I was installing a new graphics card into my computer (that I built) I was shocked to find a strange card that wasn’t mine somehow installed on the motherboard (earlier minor details left out - I’m keeping this short). “How the *@# did that get in there?!”, I asked myself. You see these are the facts, I live by myself and there’s no possible way that it came into my home and became installed unless someone else took the time and effort to put it there while I wasn’t home!! I wasn’t cheating on anyone, my criminal record consists of a very old D.U.I., a few parking tickets, I like grown women, I have no foreign ties and I don’t go about promoting political causes or causing unwanted commotion. Anyway, I pulled the card out and threw it in the trash while saying to myself, “who would be foolish enough to plant a bug in my boring home?” Also when I first discovered the card it had occurred to me that I would need a plan of action, because whom ever placed it there would probably try again and I wanted to know who was behind this invasion of my privacy. Sure enough sometime later I was going through my bookcase and “WOW!”, sitting out of sight on the bottom shelf I found a brand new portable compact disk player with all the frills! It didn’t belong to me or any of my friends or neighbors! So, I decided not to throw it out and see what would happen if I kept it over a long peroid of time (the rest of which you’ll have to imagine yourself). I pose this question for all you great thinkers and brainers out there – WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE IN THIS SITUATION?

Ciao!

An AP article regarding Mr. Hawking's question drew me in.

I want to say that I think it's spectacular that nearly 17,000 people have answered so far. What I am concerned for is the overwhelming pessimism from the majority of the answers.

Here is (are) my question(s):

Do we really live in a time when hope is fleeting and the world is becoming blind to the beauty of mystery? Is the human race or, at least, western culture more pessimistic now than in the past? Do we truly believe that we are doomed? If so, why do we feel this way?

born with the sexual feelings and orentations that they have, would that mean that pedophiles are also born with their sexual preferences? If we allow homosexual marriage, will that not soon lead to someone demanding to have the right to be allowed to marry a child?

Americans are used to use a lot of energy resources but the Chinese only use a very small amount. There are also Russians, Europeans, Azians, Midle Eastern, Africans and South Americans who use energy but not that big amount. And there are many more people who use not enormous big energy resources to make life afordable. I do not have any numbers but it is concerning me. For example: why Amercans are not used to drive a bicycle that much as the way they do in Hongkong, Kopenhagen or Amsterdam?

If the lower 10% of the country live on $12,000 per year, but the following year Bill Gates were to be worth $100 billion instead of $50 Billion, why is that a bad thing? The poor have just as much as they had before he increased his net worth. The gap has doubled, but how does that hurt the poor???

I'm asking this question somewhat knowing the answer, but I'm so angered by the suffering I cant understand why the women(and their are millions who are not raped that are in a loving commited relationship) would want to bring a child into such misery. I realize that in many cases their is probably a dominence by the men who insist upon sex, but it seems highly improbable that this the situation with everyone of the millions of women. The problem of hunger is perpetuated by the continual breeding of human beings where there is no sustenance. Can a mass inoculation be given to prevent childbearing?(and I'm not talking about forced abortions)

As in The Serenity Prayer..... "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference" how can I expect from others what I cannot do myself?

Bono's question calls for EACH person to change their own personal behavior and thus consider what effect their actions have on others. I know that I have never had to do without. Therefore self-denial is called for in my case. However my parents did without as in the depression years and so practiced a kind of survival basic of "me first" and then they held back from excess.

Today all of us seem to be confused and have become obssessed with things, stuff and excess.

Other places in the world are so lacking that some have decided the only way to survive is to kill others. This is insanity gone beserk! In killing we are killing our own spirits. It matters not that I did not personally do the killing. I am guilty by the fact that I am ignoring injustice.
