Do you think depressed people who came to this site to ask questions ever commited suicide based on people's smart-*** answers? I've seen a few "I want to kill myself, what do I do?" questions pop up every now and then, and they always get a lot of other users telling them to do it as a joke. Do you think someone may have actually taken those remarks to heart and did it?

I certainly hope not.

Of course, if a person is so depressed as to be considering suicide, then their grip on reality is already in question and they need professional help, not advice from us however well meaning we might be.

I feel sad for the people who lack compassion - they have their own set of problems.

If they did, we would never know. One must think though, why would someone waste the time coming on here to talk about it instead of just doing it. It is obvious that they are reaching out for someone to give them a reason to continue living. Then there are those that will pretend to do such a thing just to see what answers they might get. As for those that tell them to just do it, well, they need to put on some concrete shoes and go swimming.

I've wondered the same thing.....I've seen a few of the questions you are referring too, and God I hope the asker takes the idiots answer for what it is ....ignorant...people have no idea how much weight their words hold.....think before you answer serious questions. Thanks for bringing this up, maybe people will take heart and try to help someone instead of blowing them off

Doubt it. For them to post such a thing they are clearly just looking for some attention. Having gotten it, in any form, they probably would have been satisfied for the time. What happens later, off of this site, is another sad possibility.

Maybe. I don't know the answer for that question, but I can tell you that someone who wants to kill themselves for real, would just do it. Those who threat that they want to kill themselves are looking for reasons to live a little longer. You see, life is the most precious gift that God has given us to prove ourselves. Everyday, is a new day, new adventures, downfalls, and triumphs.

I hope so, I would want to be in control of someones life. I would sleep better knowing I made a difference, by having some loser kill himself instead of wasting my valuable resources, like air and water.

probably if they were that far gone nothing would have stopped them anyway, however i have seen a great deal of the opposite and have actually been moved by people who not only offered call a suicide hotline but offered their own personal email, messaging and even phone number information and encouraged them to contact them personally.

No, those are either cries for help or as a means of getting attention.

Anyone serious about committing suicide would just go and do it, they wouldn't publicize their intentions.

i think anyone who would give an answer like that to a question that serious is a horribale person. any question like that is very serious and in some way should be reported to someone who can help.
Suicide is not something to joke about.

If someone did kill themselves, I don't believe it would be directly because of a person saying something stupid on YA. But I agree that it doesn't help any. I try to limit my smartazz answers to happy people...hehe
