I have to decide on a pension payment plan from a former employer to begin this year. I am 55. The choices are as follows.

1. $727 per month for life.
OR
2. $1287 per month for the first seven years, then $358 per month for life.

I know inflation rate and life expectancy (both unknown) are the factors deciding this. Does anyone know of any web sites dealing with making these kinds of decisions?

Socioeconomic Democracy (SeD) is a theoretical model socioeconomic system wherein there exist both some form of Universally Guaranteed Personal Income and some form of Maximum Allowable Personal Wealth limit, with both the lower bound on personal material poverty and the upper bound on personal material wealth set and adjusted democratically by all participants of society.

The median value of the personal preference distribution of either parameter is the democratically and societally desired value for that parameter. Apart from your own personal preferences for those two important societal parameters, you could also guess as to what the democratically determined values of the two parameters might turn out to be. Tons of good info regarding the many desirable aspects of, and the many societal problems solved by, SeD are easily searched. Enjoy and heave a sigh of relief! There is hope!

Should essential service workers earn higher salaries and better benefits than the average blue or white collar worker?

Negotiations are quite often a sore spot between unions and municipalities when it comes to funding salaries. Fire fighters, Police services, health care workers and teachers often are not offered contracts to thier satisfaction sparking debates on whether or not the people who on a daily basis rush into fires, fight crime, save lives & prepare our children for the future are worth higher salaries, family friendly benefits and retirement options.

To make a long story short, I was as far down as I could possibly go. After seventeen years of an unhealthy marrige, I left. I was not allowed to finish high school and had a two year old to support. BUT, going on public assistance was never an option for me. MY choice. I did everything I could to keep my head above water. I made it with no financial support from Uncle Sam. Just a lot of sacrifice and hard decent work. I'm doing well now. Question, if there were no welfare program what would others do? I am asking about the ABLED BODIED people who can work.
