To make a long story short, I was as far down as I could possibly go. After seventeen years of an unhealthy marrige, I left. I was not allowed to finish high school and had a two year old to support. BUT, going on public assistance was never an option for me. MY choice. I did everything I could to keep my head above water. I made it with no financial support from Uncle Sam. Just a lot of sacrifice and hard decent work. I'm doing well now. Question, if there were no welfare program what would others do? I am asking about the ABLED BODIED people who can work.

Congratulations on your achievement. You have good reason to be proud. Unfortunately, there are many who are not as strong as you.

Once upon a time, there was no welfare program in the USA, and people by and large survived. They were able to survive because there existed a strong family and community support system that has evaporated over time.

Able bodied people can and will survive if welfare is eliminated. But, I know some welfare recipients who will take advantage of welfare simply because they can. They take their welfare entitlement and then take a cash job so they can afford more things. I also know a few wealthy people who take advantage of our system in a different, yet morally reprehensible way. The point is that many people will take advantage of government programs to enhance their personal situations. It doesn't matter they be poor or rich.

The basic problem lies with its availability. Eliminate the program and people, rich and poor, will find a way to meet their objectives.

Social welfare programs ---- I'll just call them out for what they are, nothing more than socialism, or wealth redistribution ---- were implemented in part because of the Great Depression, but there are also other factors that influence their existence today. One is various treaties the U.S. has been a signatory to such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Section 25 of this document states that: "Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control." However, in the case of the United States, these socialist programs aren't guaranteed to people. Congress can use revenues it collects from the Social Security tax for purposes other than socialist programs, without providing funds to keep the socialist system operating. Congress can also abolish socialist programs whenever it pleases without regard to prior 'obligations' (Congress is under no obligation to provide those who have paid into the program with services). Also these programs can only be voluntary (and rightly so), as participating in socialism cannot be forced on the People because the Constitution never granted the federal government the power or authority to do so. The main statutes that govern Social Security can be found in Title 42 of the U.S. Code, Chapter 7; and also 20 C.F.R. Chapter III

Have you heard about Charles Murray's idea: Completely dismantle all welfare programs and give every single U.S. citizen $10,000 per year. If you earn under $25,000 you pay no tax on it, but everyone has to pay for health insurance and retirement.

Yes it is as you have noticed.

If we had no welfare program we'd have few lazy's thined from the herd because they'd starve. We'd probably have a lot less unwed mother's if they didn't get taken care of for being sexually irresponsible.
