The digital divide hinders the access of millions to tools like the Internet, tools that can enrich their lives by learning new stuff. As people can't access those knowledge tools, the country cannot muster an educated or skilled workforce, thus hindering the development of competitive products that could be exported bringing hard cash into the country. A lack of knowledge provokes a loss to the economy.

In my opinion, the "digital divide" is only important in more developed countries. Truly poor nations are usually still at the farm & factory stage, and the welfare of their citizens depends more on growth in manufacturing coupled with either union movements or government intervention to keep wages up and working conditions reasonable.

Only when a country has a well developed economy with a strong demand for professionals and executives does widespread access to computers become relevant.

Well, I'm doing this on yahoo answers, which is on the internet, which needs a computer, which should answer your question just fine :-) On the other hand, those without digital technology aren't quite so reliant on it ...why learn to spell when you've got spell check? It's not a hierarchy of privileged individuals, it's just a trade off.

I live in a poor country. This is the first time I heard something about 'Digital Divide'. JD is right!

We have many problems with violence (caused by drugs, guns, lack of schools, poverty). But there is not 'DD'!
