I've taught him the "nines with your fingers" trick, and of course he can do the 2's and 5's pretty well, but otherwise he really struggles. I don't know how to help him or make it any simpler because it comes so natural to me. I don't want to make him feel stupid, but sometimes I think he catches onto my frustration. If anyone has any advice on teaching him I would so appreciate it!!

Can someone please help. I have litterally done everything that I can think of and there is nothing working. The only two symbols you cannot use though are e and Pi. And I was told that you can use one more number. Could the answer be 2^Log base 2 of 5?

I want to find the area under a curve described by parametric equations x = f(t) and y = g(t). I can show that the area is the integral of g(t)f'(t)dt (from t1 to t2), but does this work for a curve that fails the vertical line test? That is, can I use the formula to find the area of a circle desribed parametrically? (x=cost, y=sint) or some other function where x'(t) is not always positive? It doesn't always seem to work for me, but maybe I'm missing something.

I am trying to understand this example my book gives of partial derivatives of functions with more than two variables.

(please note, I'm using extra parantheses for clarity)

If f(x,y,z) = (x^3)(y^2)(z^4) + 2xy + z then

1. (df/dx) = 3(x^2)(y^2)(z^4)+ 2y
2. (df/dy)= 2(x^3)y(z^4) + 2x
3. (df/dz) = 4(x^3)(y^2)(z^3) + 1

My questions:

In #1, what happened to the last z term?

In #2, again, what happened to the last z-term?

In #3, what happened to the 2xy?

It appears that I don't know some particular rule about partial derivatives, so I don't understand why these derivatives are the way they are.

Thank you SO MUCH!

a: Find a fuction r(t) for the radius in terms of t (If I am not wrong...it is t=y/3
b. Find the fuction A(t) for the area of the ripple in terms of the radius r (I am not sure about this one. Do I just take A=pi (r squared) and put it in terms of r?
c. Find A(r(t)). Explain the meaning of this function. (definetrly, I don't know what to do here)
