Double negatives make a positive in English and in Math. In English it makes sense, but in math it does not make that much sense. For me that concept has just been a rule and I do not comprehend its reasoning. If anything 1- -1 should equal -1 since you are subtracting twice because of the two subtraction signs.

I have two circles. One has a radius of 6 inches, and the other has a radius of 8 inches. Their diameters are overlapping 2 inches. Don't use calculus to solve it. What is the area of the overlapped region?

There have been a number of these questions out here, so I just wanted to give people a chance to get some points.

Easier: If you have n scales (balances) and can use each once. And you have a bunch of rocks that look the same but one has a piece of gold in it and weighs more. What is the maximum number of rocks you can have and still find the gold in n weighs?

Harder: If you don't know if the gold weighs more or less, what is the maximum number of rocks that you can have and still be able to find the gold in n weighs?

Hilbert's hotel has an infinite number of rooms and is currently empty. An infinite number of busses, each with an infinite number of passengers pulls up to the hotel. Each passenger wants their own room. How can you arrange the passengers so that each one gets their own room?

(by infinite number, I'm referring to alef-null, just as a technical note)

I have 26 stones which are all identical, save one has a chunck of gold in the center and weighs slightly more than the rest.

I have 3 balances, each of which I can only use once.

How can I find the stone with the gold?

I saw the same question asked about 12 stones so I decided to kick things up a notch. You can actually do even more stones than 26.

Good luck!

Every number has two square roots. You can't say the positive one, as making the square root of minus one either positive or negative makes -1 positive.

I would like to make sure that every family gets to dine with every other family during a family vacation week. In reality on one night there will only be two families cooking for five others. Grandma and Grandpa don't have to cook anymore. This simplifies the problem some, but I am still not sure if each family can dine with everyother family at least once that week. Any suggestions?
