I have a friend that is a PhD student at Purdue and also went back to school to start. He started taking classes at a local community college and then transferred to a university when he had taken all of their classes. It really doesn't matter where you start, you just have to work hard and show that you can do what is presented. If you need to start low, then do it. I do suggest you take several theoretical courses before applying to a graduate program (these will need to be taken at a university).

I would suggest auditing a few of the college math courses that you have already taken. This will enable you to see how much you remember and it will also help you to meet some math teachers/professors that may be able to help you get your foot in the door. Also if you are near an university with a good math program (especially graduate programs) there may be some colloquiums or seminars that you can attend. Check out the local colleges math department webpages for information.

return to school, get BS in Math, then apply for a PhD. Secret is hard work and generally having a "math mind". Career options are mostly teaching, although there is are some opportunities in engineering and financial firms.

Just start.

By the way, you don't have to have a graduate degree for some jobs, although you will probably need some kind of additional training past your bachelor's degree.
