As I understand it (and I am not an expert by any means) the equator is a hypothetical line that separates the north and southern hemispheres.

My question is how 'wide' is the equator and therefore does the area included within this band constitute the north or south?

Just curious an when I was in Africa last year we supposedly 'crossed' the equator.
