The Holy See is the smallest country recognized by most of the world.
0.44 sq km. population 932
Sometimes called Vatican City.
There are at least two smaller countries, but not nearly so recognized by the international community as Holy See.
Addendum: This is the only country in the CIA's worldfactbook that has no fertility rate. The Swiss Guard live there also. Formerly, the population of Holy See was 1, and all others were resident non-citizens. I do not know when that convention changed.
Addendum: The official long form of the name of the country is "The Holy See" with the short form being "Holy See".
Addendum: Area in square miles is 0.17, equal to 0.44 sq km. Vatican is the name of one of the hills, Vatican city is the unofficial name, primarily used by Americans, The Holy See is the official name. Italy provides military protection, Swiss Guard is an elite unit of Guardsmen from a neutral country.
Addendum2: Ok, if you aren't accepting the Holy See, the smallest country in the world, although not recognized by many is the Baillee of the Teutonic Knights. Area is two office buidlings within the city of Utrecht NL. Official Population is 133, but no residents live within the Baillee. Area is about 0.05 miles. This country was the home to the Protestant Branch of the Teutonic Knights(Protestant), officially recognized in the Napoleonic Treaties. The USA, and many others, do not officially recognize this country.
Additionally, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta is technically a country, recognized by few other countries except The Holy See, who established it. SMOM is also called the Knights of Malta, and this is who Dan Brown should have been referring to when he wrote the DaVinci Code, although they do not practice the mortification of the flesh with the use of the cilice, which Brown also mischaracterized. There are also two other Roman Catholic countries like that of the SMOM. SMOM were given these lands, again office space, by an earlier Pope, when they moved from the island of Malta.
These countries' existences are really obscure.
They are also smaller than SeaLand, which is not recognized by anyone except the owner and anyone he sells residency to. It is an abandoned oil platform in the North Sea.

Vatican City Coordinates: 41°54′10″N, 12°27′9″E — formally State of the Vatican City, or Vatican City State (Italian: Stato della Città del Vaticano, Latin: Status Civitatis Vaticanae) — is a sovereign city-state whose territory consists of a landlocked, almost completely walled, enclave within the city of Rome, Italy. The entire state is about 44 hectares (109 acres) and thus is a European microstate. It is the smallest independent nation in the world, created in 1929 by the Lateran treaties, and a vestige of the much larger former Papal States (A.D. 756 to A.D. 1870). Since it is governed by the Bishop of Rome (the Pope), its government can be described as ecclesiastical and the highest state functionaries are in fact clergymen. It is the sovereign territory of the Holy See (Latin:Sancta Sedes) and the location of the Apostolic Palace — the Pope's official residence — and the Roman Curia. Thus, although the principal ecclesiastical seat of the Holy See (Basilica of St. John Lateran, which is the pope's cathedral) is located in Rome itself, the Vatican City can be said to be the governmental capital of the Catholic Church.
