i got a shaft that is 18.5mm in diameter that needs a woodruff key. i dont have the dimensions of the holes for the key. i was wondering if there is a rule of thumb to use a certain size key for a certain size shaft. any help is appreicated.

again i got the same question about the cotter pins. i have a hole with a diameter of 3.5mm in diameter. i would assume that you would use a cotter pin thats close to that size. maybe 3.2mm or 3.3mm?

Is there a formula (preferably a calculator on the web) that can estimate the power lost over long extension cord runs? On the Sears web site they sell a 16/3 cord 100 feet long. It says 13 amps up to 50 feet and 10 amps up to 100 feet. So if I need to connect 4 of these to go 400 feet I want to know about how many amps I would really have available at the end. Also, I would like to do other calculations for going even longer distances up to 900 feet.

A piece of Nichrome wire has a radius of 6.5 x 10^-4 m. It is used in a laboratory to make a heater that dissipates 6.00 x 10^2 W of power when connected to a voltage source of 120 V. Ignoring the effect of temperature on resistance, estimate the necessary length of wire.

Parallel wiring question....

What resistance must be placed in parallel with a 155 ohm resistor to make the equivalent resistance 112 ohms?

Any help is appreciated!!

Two resistors, 35.0 ohms and 64.0 ohms, are connected in parallel. The current through the 64.0 ohm resistor is 3.40 A.

(a) Determine the current in the other resistor.
(b) What is the total power consumed by the two resistors?

Any help is appreciated, I cannot figure out how to solve this without knowing the voltage across the power source????

Details of the Hydraulic system
1) Gear Pump delivers a flow of 4Ltrs/min
2) The system pressure is 100bar (direct pressure relief vave is used)
3) Hydraulic oil 68 is the oil medium.
4) The hydraulic system is used to actuate 2 vertical pistons (cylinder) simultaneously.
5) The pressure ports are blocked when the gear pump is started.

Problem:
1) Oil gets heated to 48°C within 20mins of operation.
2) As the oil gets heated the pressure drops from 100bar to around 40bar. In this case the pistons cannot be moved upward (due to the load-weight on the piston).
3) The relief valve is the hottest component in the system.
4) After the system is switched off for 30mins. The pressure comes back to the normal 100bar and then again after 20 mins of operation the sytem pressure drops again...and so on
1) Is gear pump the problem
2) Is the relief valve the problem.
3) Can the problem be due to suction strainers
4) Is the Hydraulic oil 68grade the problem

Please help

This term is sexist, outdated, silly, and irrelevant. It has been replaced in most progressive companies with "Designer". The term "Draftsman" is about as relevant as the term "Blacksmith", "Shoe Cobbler" or "Milkman".

At best, entry level employees are called "Drafters". Most large progressive companies promote their people to Designer I, II, III, and then to Senior Designer on to Lead Designer.

Lead Designers still produce some drawings, but do mostly supervision, quality control and checking. The skills and training needed by good designers these days are slightly more advanced than the old time draftsman of yesteryear.

If you are still using the term "Draftsman" or making references to the "Drafting" department, maybe you should just go ahead and file that application for Social Security.

Break out the Poli-grip and the rockin chair, old timer! But... please, get out of the engineering field.

I just wonder how much salary is reasonable ....

I apply as a designer (product designer)

I have transportation design bachelor's degree
(Art Center College of Design)
and around 2 years work experience.
By the way, I also have Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (in my country)

So, how much salary a year is reasonable for me to ask for a design job in the interview.
