I have been assigned a Tech project and I have to incorporate every simple machine into one long sequence of machines that will be started by touching one end. Once touched it must run by itself. It must last longer than 5 seconds and fit on a 1 foot by 1 foot wood board. All machines must take advantage of their mechanical advantage (i.e. no rolling down incline planes or screws). I am allowed to use any materials I can find. Any ideas on how I could make this work? Especially, how can you make use of a screw?

Note that electricity in Phila PA area is about 6 cents/kwh--and the new heatpump has EER of 13.
Gas furnace also new and approx 94% efficient.
Both use the same whole house blower system.
Gas furnace kicks in when temp falls below 32 F in Phila area.

Thanks for your thoughtful replies....

I want to use an Inverter duty motor for an application. And I want to use Automation Direct `s GS2 AC 3.0HP drive, but since there are a lot of choices I do not know if this manufacturer is good or not. Can you recommend? and provide a list of best manufacturers, from 1 to 10, if possible. Thanks a lot.

I have a 1 story home, composition shingles, 1/2" plywood over original horizontal battons. 6" concrete foundation floor. existing room is 14.5 wide, new room would be 17.5 wide.

I want to remove a load bearing wall. Existing joists are 2x6x15 24" on center and join over the load bearing wall to be removed (the wall is about 1 ft to the "left " of center join). The next wall that I can use for support is the other side of the hallway 3 1/2 ft to the "right" of existing wall.

There are only two 2x4's used as support for the ridge beam in the attic over this area of the house (i think this is inadequate, but its been there for 40 years). Can I use/create a wider beam rather than taller, span tables only show in the order of 2x, not 4x or 6x. and I do not know how this will work. In addition where can I locate different beam manufacutreres (LVL, steel ) what size beam?

I would like to stay under 6" in height of the new beam so it will still fit in the existing spac

we have a safe at work. I havent seen it for ten years. The mystery is whats in it? the key and number cannot be found

a lock smith wants £500 to open it. they asked me an engineer to look at it. I cut my finger moving it ten years ago its pay back time.

I dont think the burning tackle will help I think the hinges are only the primary obstical. The are probably dead bolts. It has a key hole has well has the dial. Should I burn through the key hole and locks or the hinges or both?( It could fuse weld the lock) Its about four foot square and weights about a ton. Although I have no claim to its contents should I open it I will reveal them

Only currently working engineers answer, please. I am trying to make myself more marketable in the engineering fields and maybe pick up extra projects on the side. I am already self-taught with data historian software, some neural network software, some VB programming and MS Office suite. Would AutoCAD be the direction that you would go or is there another area or trend that would be more appealing or lucrative? (Short of actually getting an engineering degree...If I only had the time!!) Thanks very much.
