I am asked to find the percent ionic character of CaF_2 and SiO_2.

I am given the formula %ionic character = {1-exp[-.25(x_a - x_b)^2]} x 100

My problem is that I don't understand what the formula means. What is exp? I know x_a and x_b are electronegativities.
