I am really confused on how to complete the square. I have not been able to find anything that explains how to solve it from the form I am working with.

x^2 + y^2 + ax +by = c

My book tells me this:

x^2 + ax _____ y^2 + by______ =c

x^2 + ax + (a/2)^2 - (a/2)^2 + y^2 + by + (b/2)^2 - (b/2)^2 = c

:: This is where I get confused. Going from that to this. ::

(x + a/2)^2 - (a/2)^2 + (y + b/2)^2 - (b/2)^2 = c

Figuring out the rest of the process I understand.

Thanks!
