Hello, I need a little help here. I thought I understood this stuff but can't figure out this one concept. We're dealing with functions so here goes

f(x)=3x^2+2x-4
Find the value of f(x+1)

I thought it would work like this:
f(x+1)=3(x+1)^2+2(x+1)-4
=3(x^2+1)+2x+2-4
=3x^2+3+2x-2
=3x^2+2x+1

The answer is actually f(x+1)= 3x^2+8x+1

Can someone please explain this to me and tell me what i'm doing wrong?

Here is the scenario:
A jeep is stuck in the mud, my cell phone is dead, so I cant call a tow truck.
All I have in the jeep is a length of rope.
As I look around all I can see are towering trees, but no branches to possibly use as leverage.
