BIRDS HAVE BEEN FORCED TO LIKE AIRPORTS. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN CREATED BY US HUMANS. IN THE PROCESS OF URBANISATION WE HAVE SYSTEMATICALLY TAKEN OVER FORESTS & OTHER LANDS. THE RESULT BEING FORCING NOT ONLY BIRDS BUT ALL SORTS OF WILD ANIMALS INTO THE LAST REMAINING OPEN TRACTS OF LAND OF WHICH UNFORTUNATELY AIRPORT IS ONE. YOU MAY NOT BELIEVE THIS BUT DURING MY STINT AT THE DELHI AIRPORT I HAVE SIGHTED VARIETY OF LIVING THINGS FROM ALLIGATORS TO SNAKES TO DEERS INSIDE THE AIRPORT PREMISES.

A major reason seems to be the same reason they like golf courses -- grass. The parts of the airport that are not covered in tarmac are covered in grass and geese especially feed there. These are the types and size of birds that are a problem at airports, of course. But future airports may have less of a problem, due to "designer grasses". See the link below for an article about new grasses being developed to have no value to insects, thereby no value to birds!

Of course, that will not get rid of the second reason birds like airports -- thermals. But that is less of an issue, as it is not a "flocking" problem like the geese one.

Hope this answers your question!

They probably like the grass to eat worms, bugs and seeds and wide open expanses where predators can't easily surprise them.
