How Long Do We Have?
About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:
'A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.'
'A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.'
From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. '

'The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years'

I'm feeling increasingly claustrophobic in the UK nowadays, considering we've got more CCTV in this country than anywhere else in the world. The government has openly admitted recording EVERY conversation we have, in order to pinpoint where we are 24/7.
I can't smoke, drink, do this, say that.

In my state, the Unemployment Rate hovers at 12 percent. There has been outsourcing, in-sourcing, home losses, and people once making a decent wage now working in menial, low-paid jobs.

Many do not have health insurance and getting help is a long, humiliating process. Some people are desperate, unable to pay fuel bills in an cold winter. Even those going to other states to work are unable to find jobs with salaries that pay their way, with enough left over to save their homes and pay their bills.

President Bush is rich. I don't think he has ever gone into a grocery store on a budget, or worried about paying a bill. Perhaps the top echelon of Corporate moneymakers are enjoying the economy, but many citizens are not. Don't tell me that young people are thriving, because I know better. Your car insurance alone equals $200 to $300 monthly to insure an old junker. Add rent, food, health insurance and car payments....can't be done without help. The truth is, this economy sucks!

Just last week, “Jurors deadlock in 6 of 7 defendants in Sears Tower plot"

MIAMI - One of seven Miami men accused of plotting to join forces with al-Qaida to blow up Chicago's Sears Tower was acquitted Thursday, and a mistrial was declared for the six others after the federal jury deadlocked.

The mistrial means prosecutors will have to decide whether to retry the six men.

The outcome was a setback for the Bush administration, which had seized on the case to illustrate the dangers of homegrown terrorism and trumpet the government's post-Sept. 11 success in infiltrating and smashing terror plots in their very earliest stages.

Lyglenson Lemorin, who was not the alleged ringleader, was acquitted.

Judge: White House logs are public
By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - White House visitor logs are public documents, a federal judge ruled Monday, rejecting a legal strategy that the Bush administration had hoped would get around public records laws.

And if Bush doesn't have anything to hide, why would he be fighting to prevent the visitor logs from being released to the public?

(Let me guess... national security?)

Other countries negotiate with Pharmaceutical companies so that there are limits on the amount the Pharmaceutical Companies can charge. Since we don't have such limits in our country, are pharmaceutical companies charging us more than they otherwise would if they didn't have price controls in other countries?

To put it simply, do we pay more so that they can pay less?

Of 57 Islamic countries in the world, 7 have a law condemning to death anyone who leaves the faith. And Pakistan is currently considering adopting the same legislation. Why???

In the UK, there are currently several young women hiding after their lives have been threatened because they left Islam. Again, why, can anyone explain the logic?

In a study conducted by think tank Exchange Policy, 36% of British Muslims believe that those leaving Islam should be killed.

Please, can someone tell me how this is reconciled with what Muslims keep telling me about Islam being 'the religion of peace'?

I've always had health care provided by employment and so has my husband. I've been wondering why there is such a negative backlash against the thought of universal health care. The arguments i've heard center around not wanting to foot someone else's bill. But, currently, isn't that what our taxes are doing anyways. Ethically, why wouldn't it be more honorable to provide health care for everyone and eliminate the need for health insurance altogether. It seems to work in other countries, why haven't we adopted it here? Is it because of greed? Selfishness? Our money goes to so many programs that are don't necessarily benefit us individually. Social security, for instance...Many say those of us paying for it now won't even have it by the time we need it.

What do you think. Please don't bash me. I'm really just trying to understand why people are so against it when it seems to be working great in other parts of the world.
