Garden & Landscape - September 2007

No matter what, next door he either over waters, has his sump pump and pool backwash drain in my yard. The water pools in one area of it which is the corner. I have tried unsuccessfully for years to get him to stop it and nothing works.
I have a drainage system installed in the yard, and had a drain placed in this corner. However, the installer did a poor job and the drain isn't deep enough for the water to reach the drain.
I thought of trying to continue the slope from the house next door but it comes down sharply at the fence, then it dips slightly in my yard and the drain is about 8 feet away. So all this water collects there in this heavy clay soil, and doesn't get to the drain.
It was suggested to me by a garden center to install stones and rocks to try to raise the level so the water goes into the drain.
Also, the garden center said that with putting down rocks and stones enough of them will also make it so the water stays underneath the stones. Anyone have experience with this?

I just moved house and want to start a compost, there is a big black plastic compost bin in the backyard so thought I'd use that, it has a plastic bottom I think too. Do I just chuck kitchen scraps in or do i need to add dirt/water/something else? How will I get it out when its full? Would I be better off just digging scraps into some bare soil? Any advice appreciated!

I have a pumpkin vine growing in my yard. We planted seeds two years ago and they are just now growing. The female flowers have little pumpkins, but they die with the flower. Is there a way to get them fertile, besides "helping" them have sex, in a sense? I read that you can do it by hand, get the pollen from the males and transfer it to the females. That just seems like a lot of work. Is there an easier way to get the pumpkins to mature?

My husband and I need a new weed eater / line timmer / weed-wacker.....it's called many things! You know what I mean though.
We've decided to go with a gas instead of electric. And we are prepared to pay between $150 and $250 because we want a nice one (echo or stihl).
But at the store we noticed that they have a new kind. It is where you can just re-load trimmer line 'sticks', instead of winding the ever-tangling spool.

My husband wants to go for the trimmer that just has replacement sticks, because he hates re-loading the spool.

I however like the fact that with the spool you can 'tap it' to extend more line. With the re-loadable sticks, wouldn't you have to stop every two-dozen feet, turn it upside down, put two more sticks in, over an over again? To me this seems tedious. Do the sticks last longer then the line on the spool does?

Are there any professionals out there who would reccomend one over the other? And for what reasons?

Thanks!

I have a huge magnolia which is spectacular - we inherited it when we bought the house. It is only about 7 foot away from the kitchen wall and 2 foot away from the garage wall (it's in a corner) I am worried that it may start to cause damage to the foundations of the house. The magnolia is well establised and is prob about 25 - 30 years old. Thank you

Since we moved into our new house (in 2003 end), we have found at least 7-10 snakes (4-10 inches in length). Some of them were brown and some whitish cream in color. I dont know whether these are poisionous. Beacuse of this, we are afraid to let our 6 year old son play or go do anything in the yard. There is a property behind our house which has 3-4 horses. They have stale water there. Can anyone suggest a way to get rid / prevent the snakes from coming to our yard. In India there is a Vine (Sarpa Ghandi) which has the smell of garlic which deters snake. I dont know the botanical name of this plant or whether it will do any good.

I hear coffee grinds is a good organic fertilizer but not sure how to use it. Should it be mixed in the soil or can you just sprinkle on top? Does it matter? Also, I'm specifically using them for my window box tomato plant (city living). Is it good for tomato plants and how much coffee should I use?

I'm redoing the landscaping on each side of my house (about 3 feet wide - runs the length of the house). One side gets full son, the other side is predominantly shady. Any ideas for flowering perennials that do well in the shade (besides hostas)? Also, on the sun side of the house I'm doing day lillies and a blue flowering ground cover (forget the name). Any suggestions for some kind of flowering bush to put at the corner of the house? Something that doesn't get too big, and I don't care if it's evergreen or not. Maybe azalea or something?

Thanks in advance!

I'm looking around to find some kind of flower/plant to grow. I live in south Texas, so I need something that can handle the heat and humidity down here. I can keep it inside or out, in a hanging pot, or left on the porch, in the sun or in the shade. I'm open to anything really. So, what are your favorites????
