We recently bought an older home in need of ALOT of repairs/upgrades. One being the kitchen. To save money, I would like to try and paint our countertops instead of replacing. Is this possible? I have heard it done on some DIY shows, but have no idea of how to go about it. Anyone do this before? .... Any tips?

Pros and Cons. Considering Getting one. Also, do you think you could run a 3 zone, base-board heater (boiler) off of it?

The theremostat broke off my shower months ago and until I can get it fixed, the temperature is fixed at a fairly hot setting. After about 10 minutes a loud bang is emitted (I think from the pipes) which is then heard outside where the vent is. I know I need to get the thermostat fixed but does anyone know why this is happening? Is it becuase of the surge of hot water needed to run the shower? Is it causing damager? It only happens when running a hot shower.

To emgeealex- I am a little anxious about my predicament. I am in a hurry because my son wants breakfast, and I have a lot to do today. Just thought I would pass along that I did not write this for you to correct my spelling errors. You must feel superior to others, pointing out other's mistakes. You must not believe in a higher power because you have no faults.

My daughter is unhappy with her room she always has to share it when guests come over and sleep in my other daughters room. She was thinking about living in the attic if that was possible. My attic doesn't even have a floor it just has those wooden bars across it. Is this possible to make it liveable for her?

We sat down at the table, discussed what we wanted and my husband and I signed a contract for the work $50,000. Over the weeks the contractor said well we could do this or that, (believing this would be included in the $50,000 because the contractor never discussed additional money) and no knew contract was drawn up. Our last bill, which he gave us, I asked him, this is it, this comes to the $50,000 of our contract and he said yes. We only signed the initial contract, and then he just billed us in increments (no new signatures) and we paid the incremental bills.

There was one item along the way, he said a stump needed to be remove from the driveway, he said to grind it would cost $300-400 or more if we removed the stump. I called a different guy who grinded it for $75 dollars.

So now our contractors is giving us a bill $2,200 over the amount we expected. And said he was billing us later for chimney and duct work

I do not have the money, I just don't. What do I do

I just had a home inspection on a home I've signed the contract on. I had to leave before the end of the inspection, but the inspector called me and said that he had the water running (the home has a well) to do a septic tank test and after about 10 minutes, it would only dribble water. He said he turned it off and waited a little bit and turned it back on and it worked fine for about 10 minutes and then dribbled again. Does this "sound" like a problem with the actual well or maybe just the well pump needs to be replaced? Obviously I'm getting an inspection by a well professional, but I've just been wondering. If it's the actual well, I think I've lost my interest unless the seller will fix it, which he probably won't.

I live on the west coast (California) and I don't know of anyone out here that uses oil to heat their homes. We use electricity and natural gas.

I am constantly embarrassed when people come to the house. They instantly wrinkle their noses or fan their face when they enter. Some guests won't even stay inside. Everyone says how bad the cat odor is in the house. I can't smell it, so I am always amazed at the reactions. I'll admit, my cats are a little "dirty" and more often than not, miss the litterbox. In some areas, the carpet is stiff with dried cat pee. I've tried Fabreze and various pet odor eliminators on the carpets near the litter boxes, but I'm still getting the same reactions. There's no sense in pulling up the rugs and getting new ones while I still have the cats. I tried that in the front hallway. I even sponged the floor, but the odor is still there, I'm told. How come I can't smell it?

I ask this because many decades ago, my mother used to have HBMG's that came back year after year. I cannot find perennial seeds - only annual seeds. But last fall, my husband ordered 'fill' dirt for his new berry plots...and we have growing from that- Hevenly Blues! Could these be the perennnial type that sprouted from the seeds that were in the dirt from who knows where.
Thanks everyone for your help!!
