how should i ask a girl out that i really like

My father and sister came to me and suggested that I give it a go. I'm 22, british male and have been single quite a while now.
Thing is, I'm not sure about it. I always considered internet dating to be a very desperate measure, a last resort if u will. My opinion is the only people who apply r those who have little to nothing to offer (I apolagise if I insult anyone with these words).
I probably have nothing myself to offer any young ladies, but I'm not sure if I want throw in the towel and admit that.

but my bitter thinking will also protect me from the 1000s of messed up women out there. if i were to let my gard down the bad ones would feed on my like fiys on crap so to the few good one im sorry for my harshness its not you it the bad ones. if there were more good women then bad ied be cool, but all i see it liers and women that want men to serve them like some sort of slave. so to the good ones im sorry. i must fight back

I have a 23 yo son that is in love with a girl 2000 miles apart. They have never met face to face but are constantly on the phone with each other and I have cought him having "phone sex" on a number of occasions.
