" Prior to the revolution 'France was an old nation', in that it had "a preexisting government, a preexisting king, and preexisting prejudices."

This is for my Ap Euro class. It would be greatly appreciated if you could tell me who said it. i had looked it up myself and found nothing. Please help! Thank you soo much!

1) "For a while these reveries provided an outlet for his imagination; they were a satisfactory hint of the unreality of reality, a promise that the rock of the world was founded securely on a fairy's wing." (talking about Gatsby's character again.. and how he lies?? what does it mean?)

1) “Self-control!” Repeated Tom incredulously. “I suppose the latest thing isto sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife.Well, if that’s the idea you can count me out. . . . Nowadays people beginby sneering at family life and family institutions, and next they’ll throweverything overboard and have intermarriage between black and white.”Flushed with his impassioned gibberish, he saw himself standing alone onthe last barrier of civilization"

2) "“His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people - his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God...and he must be about His Father's business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty. So he invented...Jay Gatsby...and to this conception he was faithful to the end.” (this quote is about Gatsby's character.. but what does it mean!?)

"ethics are never timid, rarely convenient, and always vital"

What does this mean exactly? How does it effect you personally, and the way you live your life?

I have a few favourites but I think there has to be that 1 one-liner that will energize every human being.

A few of my favourites are:
1. "Behind every problem is a cleverly disguised opportunity"
2. "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm"

"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy" was not Tom Waits, W.C. Fields, Fred Allen (he said "full" bottle ane "full" frontal labotomy). It would be best to attribute this quote to Dorothy Parker, American short-story writer and poet, 1893-1967. Although Tom Waits did use the quote in the 1977 TV show "Fernwood2Night", Parker coined it long before. Use the internet people-all of your research is there!!!!!!

I talks about the ones you cry about arent worth crying over and the right one would never make you cry?

I would prefer an origin meaning, rather than the literal meaning of running very fast.
