I would like to know the origin of this phrase and/or what it means please

i came across this phrase in plastic modeling. weathered look or "weathering" is a technique according to which you apply paint thinned with resolvent in a certain way an in specific places on a model (of a plane for example) in order to make it look like it has been used (as opposed to be right out from the factory) and got marked by the forces of nature, like the wind and rain.
this is my knowledge of the phrase, i don't know if it applies elsewhere. hope it helped

It means left out in all/bad weather.

It means the weather has degraded the object's appearance eg. face, garden furniture.
