While it literally means "Laughing Out Loud" ... so much of human discourse is how something is said and not just the words. As much as anything else it is a modifier to add verbal tone and context as well as non verbal meaning.

LOL is used to imply a joke .. a pun ... that you are not being entirely serious ... to interject levity ...

such as "Where have you been for the entire history of the internet to not know LOL ... prison? ... lol"

Without the lol the phrase seems a little confrontational and insulting ... as a joke its funny. Hence the value of lol, lmao, etc...
