It means to think outside of the standard thinking in the industry be open to change and see if you can adopt it..
Example:
The Swiss were the worlds makers of watches. One day digital came along. They refused to even consider it as it was technology that didn`t match their fine springs, jewels, and gears (their box). Because they refused to think outside their industry (outside the box they were in) they lost the title of watch makers of the world to Japan, the US and other countries that began making digital watches.
Now only antique dealers deal in Swiss watches and an industry was lost.
Hope that helps
Good question.

thinking inside the box means thinking of things that are obvious or easy to figure out. it means thinking of things that everyone could find out.
outside the box means leaving your comfort zone to think of things no ones thought of for.
basically, it means to look for the answers with deeper or more complex meaning.
