I attend college for nettech/security. Before I got a degree in criminal justice. We were told to introduce ourselves and tell our educational background. I mentioned I had graduated a little over a year ago with a degree in c.j. my unix teacher then laughed and said he thought criminal justice students were a bunch of cry babies. Later he found a notebook someone had left in class and opened and said "oh criminal justice notebook who needs them" and threw it in the trash. later he was showing us how to log into the unix system and i spelt something wrong and he told me to get with the program

I was in the Army in 1988. We had a field manual that our Drill instructors called the "smartbook".
This manual explained everything from drill and ceremony to how to service the M-16. It taught how to make fresh water stills in the desert and how to find North using the sun. It also explained the basic hand grenade styles.
I'm trying to locate one, but I don't know the actual name or number of the field manual.
Every soldier in basic training got one.
If you know the name, or where to get one, please let me know,
thanx.

This sentence has proven difficult for me to rephrase b/c I can't seem to be able to word it so it sounds interesting, and I can't just use this word for word. HELP!

Here it is:

When Montag fails to show up for work, his fire chief, Beatty, pays a visit to his house. Beatty explains that it’s normal for a fireman to go through a phase of wondering what books have to offer, and he delivers a dizzying monologue explaining how books came to be banned in the first place. According to Beatty, special-interest groups and other “minorities” objected to books that offended them. Soon, books all began to look the same, as writers tried to avoid offending anybody. This was not enough, however, and society as a whole decided to simply burn books rather than permit conflicting opinions. Beatty tells Montag to take twenty-four hours or so to see if his stolen books contain anything worthwhile and then turn them in for incineration. Montag begins a long and frenzied night of reading.

for some reason, i can't word it right. i'm really bad with this kind of stuff so any rewrites would be unbelivably helpful. Its about Fahrenheit 451.

The people in this society do not read books, enjoy nature, spend time by themselves, think independently, or have meaningful conversations. Instead, they drive very fast, watch excessive amounts of television on wall-size sets, and listen to the radio on “Seashell Radio” sets attached to their ears.

Montag encounters a gentle seventeen-year-old girl named Clarisse McClellan, who opens his eyes to the emptiness of his life with her innocently penetrating questions and her unusual love of people and nature.

In the paper, how do I cite a quote that is from a short story from a book of short stories?

Example:
(Smith 24) would be a normal citation..

The book of short stories is composed by someone other than the author (all the stories share the same author). I want to cite what the actual author, Ambrose Bierce, says in one of his stories.. I can't really go by page number, can I? It is many stories in one book, that is composed by Edward Wagenknecht.

So, do I still say:
(Bierce 95) ?

Thanks.

In 1950 the Scout handbook described proper half=staff display of the U.S. Flag as a flag's distance from the top of the pole. I see that no flags are displayed this way in 2007. The present U.S. Flag code describes 1/2 staff as halfway down the pole. What changed, and who did it?

I work with a lot of kids whose home life is less desireable, I care a great deal about that. I want them to learn as much as they can so they have a better life. For everyone who said, just teach them in school, you have no control over their life at home. But, that is like throwing them into a lions den and saying good luck.
