After much laboratory testing. it is determined that a ball thrown downward with an initial speed of 5 feet per second falls approximately d = 16t^2 + 5t feet in t seconds. Determine how long it will take for a ball to drop a distance of 159 feet.
(^ is the symbol for an exponent, right?)
Now I started by writing
159 = 16t^2 +5t
I then translated it further to
16t^2 +5t -159= 0
Then I got really stuck please can anyone help unconfuse me.
I came up with 3 seconds but really don't know how. I nedd to factor it into two binomials but I have no clue how to really get to that step or further, this is more complicated than I am used to.
