If you sound more like a Country&Western singer than like an opera singer, then you are singing through your nose.
Another clue: Look in the mirror as you sing. Are your teeth and tongue visible? If your mouth isn't way open, you are singing through your nose (at least partially).

You will sing more with an open throat and less through your nose if you sing on the vowels and speed through the consonants.
So "I'm dreaming" is sung as:
"I......mdrea......mi.....ng".

hold your nose closed while you are trying to sing. It will sound like you have a cold if you are trying to sing through your nose. Also, hard sounds like "m" or "ing" will be hard to hear clearly if you are singing through your nose.

Keep your nose tightly closed, and when you are singing consciously try to use your breath from deep in your lungs to sing (your diaphram). You'll notice it sounds much clearer!
