I really want to switch to Linux. I am soooooo tired of windows. However I am in IT student and need to learn programming. Any Linux gurus here have any suggestions for me? What distro would be the best, what emulator program would be the best, and are there any Linux programming programs for beginning programmers? I don't really want to dual boot because that would mean I would have to shell out $300 for windows (the windows im running is bootleg, and I inherited it on this pc), however I will as a last resort.

I'm 13 and for about a year I have wanted to go into web design, I know it isn't long but I'm pretty set on it.
I use an online web host called Piczo [www.piczo.com] and the websites I do on there I am happy with and my friends seem to like. I know two web designers, who both say, for personal websites the designs I do are good.

Does anyone please know some freeware that I could use, and publish to the web free, and preferably without subscription. Also as like to Microsoft Front Page as possible as I am using it at school.

I opened my word document and suddently after footnote number 27 comes number 31 (but the content is the footnote number 28). I try to add a footnote after number 27 and it still says number 31. What should I do to fix this problem?

OK, in my computer class we learned a little C programming (and by little i mean little) and I thought that I may want to work with programming as a possible career. I'm looking to learn C++, but I have a Mac, and I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. Do you have to install the language itself? Where can I find a good compiler? I've tried to do my research, but I don't understand most of what people are talking about (they start going on about Xcode and I get completely lost). Can someone please explain to someone who has basically never programmed before how to be able to write and compile C++ so I can learn? I was told that C++ is the best to learn first and everything else would come easier (or else I could've started with Java - my text editor, TextMate [which I use for all my XHTML and XML projects] won't compile C++).

I guess I do have a little programming knowledge since I learned a decent amount of XML, but its not even close to C++.

I currently have a procedure that loops thru a recordset to determine
what files need to be loaded to my database. The naming convention of
the files has always been accounts.txt, namelist.txt, etc. Within the
procedure I also validate that the file loaded to the server was loaded
within the current day. Everything has run smooth for quite some time
using this method.

Now the vendor has told me he has choice, but to the send the file to
me like accountmmddyyhhmmss.txt. How can I load these files within my
procedure now that a time-stamp has been appended to the file name ? My procedure knows the filename only as account.txt not
accountmmddyyhhmmss.txt.

Hello I have a php script that selects zip codes finds their distances from each other and then stores those zips that are 10/20/50/100 miles away from each other.
To start this script was taking around 4 mins to store 500 zips. However as the database size has increased the time to execute the script slowed.

I have completed 10’000 of the zips, and the databse is now 40Mb in size. However now when I try and execute the script it takes around 10 mins to store just 20 zips, and I get an internal server error.

I have checked my php.ini and everything to do with mysql is to the max, so I can’t see why it is coming up with this.

I have tried to save the database using export however it tries to save for about 5 mins and again I get the internal server error.

Again this is only to do with the size of the database as I am able to export smaller databases.

Does anyone know how I can firstly get my script to speed up again and secondly how to get it to save larger databases.
