I would reccommend CreativeCommons.org
You can customize the rights that people "should" have to use your application.
The operative word is should, as anyone can completly ignore a copyright or creativecommons.

I have my photography CC'd. Basically I give anyone the right to use my photos, provided they give me the credit.

By international law everything what YOU produce it is YOUR "all rights copyright" unless you specify a different status like "free", "public domain". You don't need to register somewhere or to show the (c) on your work. However it is recommended that to have some sort of "copyright" label or page, where you post the status.

"Copyright protection begins when any of the above described work is actually created and fixed in a tangible form." - from copyright act.

now...when you sell a software you must have a written agreement about the copyright !

You can copyright anything except public domani (such as statues or anything out in the open like that). All you have to do is put a copyright notice in the code (popup in the about dialog if you have one or in the splash screen. To copyroght a web page just put "Copyright 2007 by YourName".
