1.- create an image of 16 x16 size
2.- convert that image to an .ico file and name it favicon (favicon.ico) http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/
3.- upload the ico file in the same folder as your index.html
4.- add this in the head section of your index.html file
5.- upload the new index.html file

If you're looking to putting a favicon.ico on your website, you'll need a program that will convert standard gif/jpg/png file into an ico image file which is 16x16 pixels in size. Programs such as 'IrfanView' will do that for you.

you upload an image that you have edited and saved as an icon. If you cannot save as an icon you try renaming the file type to favicon.ico.
Then add this link to the header of your page.

Need more information, what type of tool are you using?
Are you hand coding, are you using Dreamweaver, Frontpage, trellix, angelfire, geocities?
