My footnotes got disordered. The numbers are not correct. What should I do?

I opened my word document and suddently after footnote number 27 comes number 31 (but the content is the footnote number 28). I try to add a footnote after number 27 and it still says number 31. What should I do to fix this problem?

Open your document in Word. Go to your first footnote within the text of your document. Highlight it.

Click on Insert >> Reference >> Footnote & Endnote
Under Format make sure the first one starts with 1 and is Numbering Continuous
and then Apply to Whole Document.

That should update your whole documents' footnotes consecutively.
