Computers & Internet - 19 September 2006

Ok, I use a high speed cable connection so I'm not too familiar with handling modems. I have a 56K modem on a 900mhz XP machine. It connects just fine and seems stable but slow. It runs at about 26Kbps. Is that normal or are there some settings i need to adjust somewhere? Could it just be the phone line slowing it down? Anyone with info about modems feel free to chime in.

I've set my home page in IE (I'm using IE Release candidate 1) as
http://www.google.com/ but every time I open my browser it
automatically directs me to http://www.google.co.in/ and I don't want
that. Tell me how to get rid of this. Thankyou.

I have recently started learning web page design and gone over html and css. I recently checked out a couple of books at the library to help me start learning javascript. The books have given me a foundation for the structure of writing javascript, but I'm still not sure of javascripts capabilities.

I recently switched internet providers to ATT Yahoo from AOL. I paid to have to McAfee firewall with AOL and it seemed to work well. Now I just have the firewall thats on the computer. With McAfee I could see what was being blocked etc. Well I have been told that McAfee isn't the greatest, and I am thinking of paying for my own but don't know which security software is best.

Any Recomendations, good bad experiences?
Please simple english please. I don't know computer lingo..

For example once you send a photo file from your computer to another computer then delete it from yours is there a way of retrieving that file once it has been deleted? Is it still in your computer somewhere? If my computer was being "cleaned out" will the file be found then?

I'm not into graphics or design, but then I'm not particularly into the latest games either so I'm not really being pulled either way. I mostly watch movies, emails,WP, P2P and torrent share and listen to music on iTunes. Am about to buy my first iPod if it makes any difference. When I try to open any folder, a window called "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" appears with these messages:"Runtime Error" "Program:C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe" and "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way".I cannot open my folders.What can I do ? This problem occurred after installing Messenger 8-last releese.
