If you have installed any 3rd party software, or poorly written software it could cause problems with OS X. Also search the whole hard drive for your files. Your pictures will have a .jpg extention. You may find them. Last resort, boot your mac from the OS X install CD and run the Disk Utility and do a Repair Disk.

Check your trashcan for a folder called "Recovered Items". If it isn't there, try restarting and see if it shows up then. You can search through that and perhaps find the xml file for your iTunes along with other files, but not every file in there is gone, because a lot of it is duplicated.

Also try running a repair disk from Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities), to repair your disk permissions.

You have to manualy replace the lost files yourself.
