I was at a railroad park in Rochelle IL. with a friend. I noticed that some of the "railfan" types were taking lots of photos of what seemed to be the same thing. My friend told me that they were called foamers. I don't understand what this means, but their excitement at seeing these trains was kind of hard to understand. Are these folks obsessive or something?

Hi I am planning in a couple of weeks to be coming back from the west indies to paris and from paris to take a train to Brussels. The plane gets in at 6am, so what I am wondering is how long do I need to leave. Theres a cheap train at 9.17am, would that be enough time to get from CDG airport to the Eurostar or Thalys station?

Also from Burssels I will be traveling back home to England, on the Eurostar again. From Waterloo how long should I leave that from arrival time? To getting on a national rail train down to Devon.

When the conductor of a train yells "All aboard!" is it supposed to be a command for everyone to get aboard, or a statement that everyone is already aboard? I like trains so I've been railroad parks and everyone's walking around yelling "all aboard" but they don't seem like they actually know what they're doing.

Have you noticed that train drivers' always seem to be on the left of the cab. It seems odd that we are right-hand drive in this country (UK) yet trains are left hand drive. any answers would be appreciated

I find it so annoying after I transfered into New York. Previously with Seoul/Tokyo metro, one line had just 2 platforms one going west/east or north/south. Also, each lines had different colours e.g. Line 5 was coloured violet, and trains were coloured violet or Line 2 was coloured green, and trains coloured green. However, with the NYC metro, things just dont seem to be in order. Why? Just a while ago I was about too board the wrong train, when I suddenly realized that this was the wrong train, /line, yet shares the similar colour and codes... So frustrating. Can anyone explain why the whole systems like this? Or how I have to cope it with for the next 2 years?

Do virgin own those trains? They certainly paid for them. What will happen to journey times if they are put into redundancy? All that money spent on upgrading the track for tilting pendalino's and now what?

I was just promoted to RFE. My first day on the job I had to go out and download a train that had run through a red signal. It broke my heart to have to take another engineers license from him.

All the while, two railfans were standing nearby snapping pictures like they had never seen a train before. They approached another RFE and asked how long the train would be there. He explained to them that the train had gotten through the signal and the crew was being relieved.

If it had been me seeing a man getting fired, I would have gotten in my truck and left so as not to be party to something so humiliating. But, these two jerks kept right on snapping pictures.

Are these pics of engines really so important to railfans that you'd want to further humiliate an engineer that just lost his job?

Why not be more respectful and go get some lunch while you wait for a relief crew to move the train?

As you know I've decided to give the bachelor railfan (or as you say foamer) phoning me another chance. I'm wondering if railroad DVD's or videos would tide him over long enough for me to see if he has the normal male desires? Or will he still need to hang out by the tracks? I helped him clean up his part of the place, and it's only semi-gross now, and I had my friend give him a trendy haircut...he looks fairly good now, as long as he doesn't talk trains and go all weird and creepy.
