I hope I phrased this right. I'm talking about hitting a switch from the opposite side with a locomotive causing the weight to manually throw the switch over to where it should be. Is this done frequently or will it cause a derialment?

The TGV of France can take passengers in greater safety and comfort, not to mention efficacy to anywhere in the country and even out of France. Seeing the rapid rise of fuel, why don't we as a country demand a better source of public transportation. Amtrak is known for late trains and derailments. Not to mention that they SHARE tracks with regular freight trains AND have to pull over at the next station until the freight passes them!

Yesterday there was an unfortunate mishap with the New Mexico railrunner commuter train where it hit a car and some fatalities occurred. (This is news from Albuquerque Journal as well as the local network affiliates) BNSF freight trains also run on this line. Was wondering if the railroad police would have a role in investigating this. Would it be the BNSF police? (Just another curious question from a railroad fan trying to understand the role of the railroad police)

I asked a similar question earlier but I need to put it in another catagory. Im taking a reading comp test today for a job with UP. I know I will pass cause reading is my strong suit. If I get hired, which one of these jobs should I shoot for in my training class?

An entry level train person may be immediately assigned to switch person, brake person, or conductor assignments. A train crew member may also be required to qualify as a Remote Control Operator (RCO) or Locomotive Engineer.

Unlike the rest of London's underground railways, the Metropolitan Railway styled itself on a mainline railway with it's stock built to mainline specifications. It also carried freight, ran Pullman cars & it's services stertched as far as Verney Junction in Buckinghamshire (nearly twice as far from Central London as the current terminus at Amersham).

Hi!. Most railroad's use pretty simple train designation/identification techniques, however, NS' baffles me. I'm a railfan and I'm creating activities for the NS Harrisburg District on MSTS, and I can't figure out how their symbolization system works. For example, I've heard of NS trains such as 17R, 12A, 21E, 112, etc..etc. I don't understand it. BNSF uses a great system, H= High-Priority manifest, S= Doublestack Intermodal, M= Manifest, etc..etc, and then an abbreviated origin and destination code.

I DO NOT need actual trains themselves, I just need to know how the symbolization works. For example, what does 'A' mean? 'W'? And why do some NS trains use 3-digit numbers, while others use the two-digit, one-letter system?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks!

Is it possible(though VERY unlikely) the railroad industry will go back to how it used to be when the railroad companies had their own passenger service, and you could find a caboose at the end of every freight train?
