In the US it is called a pink ticket.
they give the customer a slip that requests they mail the shortage to the service provider.

Only in very rare instances do train conductors collect directly from the psgr. for transportation.
You must have a paid for ticket before you board the train in most instances. In the old days, the conductors did accept payment and issued was called a cash fare receipt. If a person needed a considerable amount of money, they were put off at the next station stop.
