I need information about the way the postal collection system operates.

1. What does the day symbol engraved on a metal plate screwed above the post box slot, stand for?

Recently I've noticed that there is a MON, TUE, WED, THU (etc...) plate on Post boxes in the local area. What does the day stand for? Does it stand for when mail is collected during postal strikes? Or does it have a more general use?

2.

Is there available a list of post boxes in Boroughs or Councils, together with collection times listed for the post boxes?

Is this list available on the internet. Or how could I acquire one successfully and straightforwardly without being refused or directed elsewhere?

3. Is it possible to collect mail due to be delivered to your address on X particular day, at any earlier time on that day or the day before. (e.g. can I collect mail due for delivery on Monday, on a Sunday afternoon for example as it is being sorted?

4. When will 2nd class mail service be withdrawn?

I already know the answers, but I want to see if anybody out there knows what I'm talking about and how well most people know about railroad history.

I'm planning to travel to DC by Amtrak. I'll be by myself, and the trip is about 14 hours. I'm very excited - this will be my first trip via train - but I'm also nervous. I've heard there can be some pretty sketchy people on trains. What's your opinion? Is it worth it? Any tips or ideas? Thanks!

Steam locomotives do have more character than modern trains, look much nicer & make nicer sounds and smells. They also have a romance about them.

I have travelled behind them on presevered railways & on main line enthusiasts specials, but could they be used to operate a modern main line railway?

I know this sounds weird but I remember as a child always wanting for trains to be coming, I would like to see the signals being activated and see the train whiz right through. Actually to this day I have to pretend to be mad when being held up by a train at a crossing.

Every steam fan has had this dream I'm sure, to see steam king of the rails again. Many say the Age of Steam has past, but I say it's just resting, and is almost ready for her come-back. In England, and in fact the world, steam power is being re-considered, due to rising oil costs, making diesil and electric more expesive to operate. In Britain, there is a new locomotive being built, the 5AT Advanced Steam Locomotive being 70%more efficient, as well as a brand new A1 Class that had been completed in 2000, the first for trial operation for British Rail, the other for main line tourist trains. The utter beauty and genius of a steam locomotive is that it can burn any combustible material (even hydrogen) to make steam, and there is even a fireless locomotive being re-fitted or built in California that will haul commuter trains, using steam made by solar power (look up Solar Steam Train in your browser). Soon, I imagine steam will be more prevalent in the US, and the world...how about you?

I'm talking more specifically about frieght, since I know decline in passengers has been affected by air travel, but all answers welcome.

For the new rail infastructure announced today? Please tell me again the benefits of privatisation including capital investment, competition, private funding and less strain on the taxpayer.
I really have forgotten how good it was all going to be. Silly me!

Why do they not get "stuck:" when there is no train coming? Is there a machanism that pops up when the train comes making it difficult to travel over the track?

Is it just because they are stupid? HAHAA

I recently purchased Microsofts Train simulator and I have a question, I have to constantly go from throttle to brake and back to maintain the correct speed.
How close is this simulation to the real thing ?
Are engineers that busy or is it more or less set it and forget it. ?

I haven't seen this question anywhere else, but is there an age limit to ride a train in America? I figured there wasn't but I heard there was. I'm talking about alone without someone older than me. I should be ok.

I am building a model railroad with a ruling grade of 3 - 3.5%. Time is early fall 1979 (or late winter 1981). My roster consists of 3 GP9s outfitted with 567D3A prime movers rated 2500hp. 2 Alco PAs and 3 PBs outfitted with 1800hp 251 prime movers, and 3 to 10 SD35s. My trains will consist of 2-12 cars + caboose. I would like to run up to 45 car trains. Most traffic will consist of lumber/forestry products, automotive, and rock from the 3 online quarries.

I found an army site with some equasions
HPx30= starting Tractive Effort : HPx300/speed=TE

and No of Cars = TE/ [3+(20xruling Grade%)]xWeight of cars

Also included was tables for weight of car taking into accout friction and drag like a 70Ton car would be 105 in the equation and a 120T would be 160 Tons.

Does this sound right? or do I need to find a table somewhere with similar grades and use their TE tables or what? Thanks in advance for any help provided.

This assumes you are in yard limits and not going too fast to visually inspect them. Some engineers say to just call the points on the switches - and only the targets if they are BAD. I don't like the idea of running through a switch.
Also...what are your thoughts on the low profile switches?
Anyone miss the old switch stands that stood 5 or 6 feet high?
